In anticipation of the upcoming Walk in History cemetery tour, Wiregrass Daily News sat down with two prominent figures in the preservation of Columbia’s local history: David Hunter, the official historian of Columbia, and Todd Chandler, owner of Columbia Manor and a dedicated volunteer with the Columbia Historical Society. During the conversation, David shared insights into the rich and often overlooked history of Columbia, Alabama. He detailed how the town has influenced the development of surrounding communities, emphasizing its once-prominent role in regional trade, transportation, and culture. Chandler highlighted the importance of preserving historical landmarks and educating the public about the town's legacy. The "Walk in History" will be held at the Columbia Cemetery, located next to Houston County High School, on Saturday, May 3, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The event is designed to be an immersive, educational experience, offering guided tours through the cemetery with reenactments and historical narratives about notable individuals buried there. Organizers hope the event will attract history enthusiasts, families, and local residents interested in learning more about the people and stories that helped shape Columbia. With contributions from local historians and community volunteers, the tour aims to bring Columbia’s past vividly to life. The reopening marks a significant milestone for the city’s cultural landscape, with events ranging from concerts to comedy planned at the downtown venue. The first performance, which has already sold out, will lead into a summer-long series of entertainment offerings. Among the highlights is The Circle Sessions, a singer-songwriter competition scheduled for July 19. The event will showcase local and regional talent on the Opera House stage. As part of its expanded programming, a new Park Series is also being introduced. This initiative will feature live performances at various parks throughout the city, aiming to increase community access to the arts. The series will begin on June 19 at Solomon Park with a performance by The Burney Sisters. Events in the Park Series will continue at different locations across Dothan throughout the year, further integrating performing arts into everyday community spaces. With a renovated venue and new outreach efforts, the city is preparing for a vibrant season of arts and entertainment designed to engage residents and visitors alike.
